How English Ordinal gematria works
Every letter of the English alphabet is assigned its position in the alphabet as its value: A is 1, B is 2, and so on up to Z at 26. To score a word, add up the values of every letter it contains. Spaces, punctuation and numerals are skipped — they carry no value and are not counted toward the total.
This convention is usually called "Ordinal" gematria, and is sometimes labelled "Simple" gematria on other calculators — the two names refer to the identical A=1-to-Z=26 system. It is the most widely used English letter-value convention, precisely because it requires no special chart to learn: the value is just the letter's ordinary position in the alphabet.
Worked example
The word "GEMATRIA" itself:
G(7) + E(5) + M(13) + A(1) + T(20) + R(18) + I(9) + A(1) = 74.
This site's own name, "SOLVEMYGEMATRIA" (letters only), totals 185 under the same system.

Other English gematria systems
Ordinal is not the only English letter-value convention. Reduction gematria reduces each letter's position to a single digit before summing (so J, the 10th letter, counts as 1 rather than 10). Reverse Ordinal runs the alphabet backwards, Z=1 through A=26. The English Qaballa, created in 1976 by the English magician James Lees specifically to analyze Aleister Crowley's Thelemic writings, uses an entirely different, non- sequential cipher unrelated to alphabet position. This calculator implements Ordinal only, as the most standard and most widely cited of these.

Is English gematria the same thing as Hebrew gematria?

Hebrew gematria assigns values based on the traditional Mispar Hechrachi table (1 through 400), which long predates any English letter-value system. Are there other English gematria systems besides Ordinal?
Yes. Does capitalization or spacing change the value?
No. Letters are scored the same regardless of case, and spaces, punctuation and numbers are skipped entirely rather than scored as zero — they simply do not add to the total.
Can two different words share the same gematria value?
Very easily. Because there are only 26 possible letter values and word lengths vary, many unrelated words land on the same total by simple arithmetic coincidence. A shared value on its own is not evidence of any connection between two words.
Does a gematria value predict anything about a word or name?
No. Gematria is a symbolic wordplay tradition, not a measurement of anything real. This calculator computes the arithmetic accurately; it does not — and cannot — tell you whether a result is meaningful, lucky, or true.
