How Mispar Hechrachi works

Each of the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet has a fixed traditional value. The first nine letters (Aleph through Tet) take values 1 through 9. The next nine (Yod through Tsadi) count by tens, 10 through 90. The final four (Kof through Tav) count by hundreds, 100 through 400. To score a word, add the value of every letter it contains, left to right as written (Hebrew reads right to left, so the first letter typed is the rightmost on screen).

Five letters change shape at the end of a word — Kaf, Mem, Nun, Pe and Tsadi become ך, ם, ן, ף and ץ. Mispar Hechrachi treats these final forms as worth exactly the same as the regular letter; a variant system, Mispar Gadol, instead gives them their own higher values (500-900), which this calculator does not compute.

Worked examples

חי ("chai," meaning "life"): Het (8) + Yod (10) = 18 — the well-known value behind the popular "chai" symbol and the Jewish custom of giving gifts in multiples of 18.

אמת ("emet," meaning "truth"): Aleph (1) + Mem (40) + Tav (400) = 441. A classic teaching notes that removing the leading Aleph leaves מת ("met," meaning "dead"), which totals 440 — the same 400 and 40 without the 1.

שלום ("shalom," meaning "peace"): Shin (300) + Lamed (30) + Vav (6) + final Mem (40, same value as regular Mem) = 376.

What is Mispar Hechrachi?

Mispar Hechrachi, meaning "standard value" or "absolute value," is the default and most widely used Hebrew gematria system. Each of the 22 Hebrew letters is assigned a fixed value: 1 through 9 for the first nine letters, 10 through 90 (counting by tens) for the next nine, and 100 through 400 (counting by hundreds) for the last four.

What about the five final (sofit) letter forms?

Five letters — Kaf, Mem, Nun, Pe and Tsadi — take a different shape (ך ם ן ף ץ) when they fall at the end of a word. In Mispar Hechrachi, a final form keeps exactly the same value as its regular form (so ך still equals 20, the same as כ). A separate, less common variant called Mispar Gadol instead gives the five final forms their own values from 500 to 900; this calculator does not implement that variant.

Why is gematria significant in Jewish tradition?

Gematria is a long-standing method in Jewish textual interpretation for finding numeric relationships between words and phrases in the Hebrew Bible and later texts, on the idea that words sharing a total may share a conceptual connection. It is a tool of interpretation and commentary, not a scientific or predictive system.

Does word order or spelling matter?

Yes — this calculator sums the letters exactly as typed, in the order given, including any repeated letters. Hebrew is written right to left, so the input field displays right-to-left, but the arithmetic itself does not depend on direction: it simply adds every recognized letter's value.

Are vowel points (niqqud) counted?

No. Only the 22 consonantal letters (and their five final forms) carry a value in Mispar Hechrachi. Niqqud marks and any non-Hebrew characters are skipped and do not add to the total.

Does a matching gematria value between two words mean something?

In traditional interpretation, a shared value is treated as worth noting, not as proof of anything. This calculator reports the arithmetic accurately; whether a coincidence in total is meaningful is a matter of interpretation, not something the number itself establishes.
